Who Is or Was the MTA Police?

The MTA Transit Police was a specialized police department for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.  The MTA Transit Police patrolled the
bus and rail lines for the MTA and under contract for other transit agencies.  The MTA Transit Police were considered peace officers under California Penal Code
Section 833 (c)(3) PC.  The origins of the Department lay in the early 1900's (see history section for more information).

In 1997, the MTA Board moved to have it's law enforcement service provided, by contract, by the Los Angeles Police and Sheriff's Departments.  In 2003, the MTA
Board awarded the entire contract to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

Currently the MTA Board is reconsidering this arrangement.
